Golcar Brass Band in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire

The Training Band....      Monday 6.15-7.00pm

We have a thriving training band which we are very proud of and provide instruments and lessons to learners of all ages in the fight to ‘keep music alive in the Colne Valley’.

Mr. Pete Strawson

Pete is a percussionist who studied Music at Salford University, where he gained a 1st, specialising in conducting under the tutorship of Professor David King and Dr Howard Evans. He was also the recipient of the Goff Richards Award for performance and, whilst a student there played for the Leyland Band, during which time they won the National Brass Band Finals at the Albert Hall in 2005.   He works as a peripatetic music teacher in Bradford and, following a 6 month spell with the Black Dyke Mills Band, is looking to focus more on conducting. Pete has been a part of the conducting team for the National Methodist Youth Brass Band for the past 4 years, and is also conductor of Vintage Brass in Golcar. "It is a priviledge to be the conductor of Golcar Training Band, I'm enjoying the challenge and fun involved in making music together. I've really enjoyed taking the band on tour to Tewkesbury this May.

We believe it is vital to keep music alive particularly among youngsters. We realise that  music lessons are very expensive and so we offer a training band where people of all ages can come and learn an instrument, make friends and enjoy the art of music making for only £1 a week. Pete Strawson is doing a sterling job with the training band and the band is growing weekly

Bring your own instrument or loan one from the band.

If you’ve never played before - don’t worry we’ll teach you. If you’re learning to play an instrument already that’s great - we’ll help and encourage you.

Music for all ages

We teach all ages, from children through to pensioners and have a range of instruments available to loan. We have a few families in the band where Mum, Dad or Grandad play too.

The training band is an enjoyable place for less experienced

players to learn:

the basics of how to breath correctly

to produce simple notes

music theory

listening and reading skills

to play music as a team

New Beginners are taught on a one to one basis or in a small group and as they progress they can have short lessons on how to improve with a member of the senior band.

Come and join us

Music is one of the greatest things you can teach your child, let them experience it with us. It helps to develop their confidence, motor skills, gives them a skill, teaches teamwork and helps them to socialise.

Help fill our bandroom

We would love to see our bandroom bursting with enthusiastic musicians  wanting to play music, have fun and provide our community with a great training band to attend all local functions.
