Senior Band - Michael J.Cox
Michael started playing the cornet at the age of 9 under the tutorship of Steven Bailey. At the age of 13, he was given an Eb Bass to try and has remained on it ever since. Michael is a very keen brass band follower and has played with several brass bands in his career, such as Rothwell Temperance, Stalybridge Old, Yorkshire Co-op and the University of Huddersfield and Salford brass bands led by David Roberts, John Maines, Simon Kerwin, Phillip McCann and Professor David King respectively, all whom are widely appreciated in the brass band movement.
Michael completed a music degree at the University of Huddersfield in 2008 and his specialism lies in conducting and performance. Since graduating from university, Michael has had many conducting roles. He spent five years as Associate Conductor for the City of Leeds Youth Brass Band.
Up until recently Michael was Principal Conductor of the Garforth Jubilee Brass Band, and in under three years there, the band was transformed significantly. In the summer of 2010, the band undertook a concert tour in Belgium. The first ever concert tour in the bands history.
At this moment, Michael conducts the Thorpe Hesley Brass Band and the Golcar Band, both of which are enjoying successes on and off the banding stage. He is looking forward to high profile engagements in 2012 .

Training Band - Pete Strawson

Peter is a percussionist who studied Music at Salford University, where he gained a 1st, specialising in conducting under the tutorship of Professor David King and Dr Howard Evans. He was also the recipient of the Goff Richards Award for performance and, whilst a student there played for the Leyland Band, during which time they won the National Brass Band Finals at the Albert Hall in 2005.
Peter now works as a peripatetic music teacher in Bradford and, following a 6 month spell with the Black Dyke Mills Band, is looking to focus more on conducting.
Peter has been a part of the conducting team for the National Methodist Youth Brass Band for the past 3 years, is thrilled to have been offered the position of conductor with the Golcar Training Band and is looking forward to the challenge and fun involved in making music together.

SENIOR BAND
Anyone with an interest in learning a brass instrument is very welcome.
We teach all ages from children through to pensioners and have a range of instruments available to loan.
TRAINING BAND
CONDUCTORS
The training band is an enjoyable place for learners to develop their listening and reading skills, and to play music as a team.
Beginners are taught the very basics of how to breath correctly, produce simple notes and are taught basic theory in the library either on a one to one basis or in a small group. As they progress they can have short lessons on how to improve with a member of the senior band.

Golcar band is a thriving 4th section band based in the village of Golcar, Huddersfield.
The band is made up of a variety of players from all walks of life. We have several players who have studied music seriously and others who have learnt to play later in life, and some young players still working hard to become outstanding players when they are older.
Golcar Band rehearse on a Monday night at Golcar Baptist Church, Chapel Lane, Golcar HD7 4HZ
Training Band rehearse from 6pm - 7:30pm
Senior Band rehearse on Monday nights from 7:30pm - 9:30pm

Golcar Band are seeking your support
We, at Golcar band would like to take this opportunity to offer a 'local' business/company or individal this unique opportunity to become our Official Sponsor. This would also give you the opportunity to become "Band President" if you would like to take up the post.
This would require a donation to enable us to purchase waterproof jackets for the band. These would be worn to travel to and from engagements and also worn at outside engagements in inclement weather.
The jackets will show the band name and logo on the left breast area with 'your' business/company or individual name and logo emblazoned across the back.
The jackets would be presented at a concert which would involve the local press (Examiner) and we would also invite ITV which would highlight your involvement in the band and help to promote your business/company. The name and logo would also be highlighted in all our concert programmes, on headed notepaper and on the band website.
The band would also welcome donations from other local business'/company's & individuals who would also be highlighted on the programmes in the same manner. Individual players could also be supported (aka Huddersfield Town Players) which would also bring the same cover in the programmes for your business/self. This 'support' would enable us to upgrade our existing Concert Uniform which would help to project a very good impression of our beautiful village and the generosity of people who live here.
This sponsorship would run until December 2013 and the support will be until December 2012 with the opportunity to renew.

Success at Yorkshire Region Area Contest
On 5th March Golcar band secured 4th place at the Yorkshire Region Area Contest which is a fantastic achievement. A great result and a fine return to the contesting stage.
Well done everybody!
After an early 8.30am start, the band grouped together at the Holiday Inn, Bradford for an early warm-up and uniform purchase for one particular conductor.
The draw was made at 9am and was mixed reaction at being drawn number 2. After a bit of a break for some breakfast (courtesy of the hotel) we grouped at St. George's Hall for 10am. The contest itself was to start at 10.30am.
By 11am it was all over - the band accounted themselves exceptionally well after a six year gap. The 2005 result saw the band finish in 11th place.
The band walked off stage feeling very pleased with how they played and come the results the band sat together in anticipation before Peggy Tomlinson read about 'In 4th place - band drawn number 2'. Cue massive cheers.
Golcar band congratulate Dinnington and Dronfield for 1st and 2nd and wish them luck for the finals and their time in the 3rd section next year.
